Andy Warhol, born Andrew Warhola in Pittsburgh on August 6, 1928, was one of the most influential artists of the 20th century and a central figure in the Pop Art movement. The son of Rusyn immigrants from what is now Slovakia, Warhol grew up in a Byzantine Catholic family where religion and art played a crucial role from an early age. After graduating with a degree in Pictorial Design from the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University) in 1949, he moved to New York, launching a successful career as a commercial illustrator for prestigious magazines such as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar.
In the 1960s, Warhol became famous for his iconic works, including the Campbell’s Soup and Marilyn Monroe series, which reflected mass culture and the celebrity industry. His New York studio, known as The Factory, became a landmark for artists, intellectuals, drag queens, and celebrities, symbolizing a revolutionary artistic and cultural scene. Beyond painting, Warhol excelled in filmmaking, photography, and performance, leaving a lasting legacy in contemporary art.
Andy Warhol died in New York on February 22, 1987, due to post-operative complications. His legacy continues to be celebrated through museums, foundations, and international exhibitions, and his works remain among the most sought-after in art auctions, particularly at auction houses like Arcadia.
