Afra e Tobia Scarpa

Afra Bianchin, born in Montebelluna in 1937, and Tobia Scarpa, born in Venice on January 1, 1935, were one of the most influential couples in Italian design and architecture during the 20th century. Both graduated in architecture from the IUAV University of Venice, where they met and began a professional collaboration that led them to establish a design studio in Montebelluna in 1960. Tobia, son of the renowned architect and designer Carlo Scarpa, initially worked as a glass designer at the historic Venini company in Murano, an experience that deeply influenced their design approach.

Their work spans architecture, interior design, furniture, and lighting, characterized by a balance of technological innovation, functionality, and sculptural yet essential forms. Among their most famous creations are the Coronado sofa (1966), the Pigreco armchair, and the Soriana seating collection (1970). They collaborated with major European brands such as B&B Italia, Cassina, Knoll, and Flos, helping to define Italian design worldwide.

Throughout their career, Afra and Tobia Scarpa received numerous awards, including the prestigious Compasso d'Oro in 1970 and, for Tobia, the lifetime achievement Compasso d'Oro in 2008. Afra Bianchin passed away in 2011 in Trevignano, leaving a significant legacy in contemporary design and architecture. Tobia Scarpa also devoted part of his life to teaching at the IUAV University of Venice, continuing to influence new generations of designers.
